IPv4 Subnetting, CIDR Architecture & Variable-Length Subnet Masks
Master IPv4 network boundary calculations, usable host ranges, and binary bitwise masking.
In IPv4 networking, an Internet Protocol address is a 32-bit unsigned integer represented in dot-decimal notation as four octets (e.g. 192.168.1.1). In 1993, the IETF standardized CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing, RFC 1519) to replace rigid Class A, B, and C allocations. CIDR notation appends a slash and prefix number (e.g. /24) indicating the count of contiguous leading binary 1s in the subnet mask.
How It Works & Underlying Architecture
To calculate subnet properties, bitwise AND is performed between the 32-bit IP and the subnet mask to determine the Network ID. The Wildcard Mask is calculated as the bitwise NOT of the mask (~Mask). The Broadcast Address is determined by bitwise OR between the Network ID and Wildcard Mask. For standard prefixes (/1 to /30), two addresses are reserved (Network and Broadcast), yielding 2^(32 - prefix) - 2 usable host addresses. Under RFC 3021, /31 point-to-point links allow both addresses to be assigned to router interfaces.

Real-World Engineering & Creative Use Cases
- Cloud Architecture & VPC Design: Planning non-overlapping CIDR blocks across AWS VPCs, Azure VNets, and GCP subnets.
- DevOps & Kubernetes: Sizing pod CIDR ranges and node CIDR allocations to prevent IP exhaustion.
- Network Administration: Configuring Cisco / Juniper router interfaces and Access Control Lists (ACLs).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why does AWS reserve 5 IP addresses per subnet?
AWS reserves the first 4 addresses (Network address, VPC router, DNS resolver, future use) and the last address (Broadcast address). Thus, a /24 subnet in AWS provides 251 usable IPs instead of the standard 254.
What are the RFC 1918 private address ranges?
10.0.0.0/8 (10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255), 172.16.0.0/12 (172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255), and 192.168.0.0/16 (192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255).
